Take Measurements of All Areas
The size of a pool table is important not only for size but the style of play you enjoy.
Measurements to take, include pocket openings, playing bed cushion height - from floor/ground up, without breaking them. All of this information is important because it'll help you make sure the pool table you have chosen, fits in the room.
Different Pool Table Sizes
Portable
Pool table sizes come in 3 1/2' x 7', 4' x 8', and 4 1/2' x 9', with the play area measuring twice as long as it is wide (± 1/8"), from the cloth-covered nose of the cushion rubber to the opposite cushion rubber.
Professional
4 1/2' x 9', with a play area of 50" x 100" is the recognized size for professional tournament play. The table bed height should be 29 1/4" minimum to 31" maximum.
Billiard Congress of America's Pool Table Regulations
The Billiard Congress of America has rules, regulations, and specifications for the size pool table that will qualify for competitions.
If your table will be used for something other than recreational home use, it's important to learn about the specifications the BCA has set in place. Especially since there's not much difference between recreational home use tables!
